Having the Courage to Change
Over 10 years ago I worked at a women’s shelter called “Having the Courage to Change.” I always thought that was a long name for an organization, but it spoke to what these women were actively doing by admitting they needed to do something different in their lives by getting off the streets. They were face to face with moments of desperation that caused them to finally consider a dramatic shift in the way they were living their lives.
If there is one thing I’ve learned in life, it’s that the only guarantee we have is change.
Nothing is static. Life, people, places, and all living things move, shift, and expand every moment of every day. It is a natural part of existence and evolution. Watching these women find it within themselves to make a decision that was new, scary and unknown inspired me in my own moments of fear to keep rising above what is comfortable and known.
Every moment of change requires a courageous step forward.
I’ve found that by accepting change as a natural part of life and letting go of the many things I cannot control, that peace and a sense of fearlessness more easily emerge. Letting go require both courage and trust, yet ultimately leads closer to freedom and joy.
How are you finding the courage withing yourself to make a new change?
